What is yoga nidra?

Yoga nidra is an artfully simple practice because it is taught lying down (or seated comfortably in a chair), guided by a teacher. It’s a great opportunity for a pause, a full-body relaxation that gives the practitioner a moment to unwind with intention. It taps into an underlying sense of peace that is always present deep within us, and helps to cultivate a consciousness of that peace, monitoring and welcoming everything present without getting caught up in it.

How does all this lovely mind/body/soul care come about? Yoga nidra involves moving through steps guided by an instructor, beginning with grounding through breath awareness, and then followed by the setting of an intention, or sankalpa. We then move into an awareness of the body, seeking to release the parts of our bodies where we habitually hold tension. From there, we go into an awareness of breath, feelings, and sensations followed by a time of guided visualization. To seal the deal, we spend a few moments revisiting the intention we set at the beginning and finally, gradually returning to as state of waking consciousness.

The only requirement for a successful time of yoga nidra is an open mind and an open heart, and a willingness to be curious. This beautiful practice is a short investment of time that will pay off in the form of peace, serenity, and focus long after the session is complete.
